Adamant AAPSU to go ahead with bandh call
ITANAGAR, June 23: All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) will go ahead with

Landslide disrupt power supply in East and West Kameng
ITANAGAR, June 23: The Executive Engineer (E), Bomdila Electrical Division has informed that power supply to East and West Kameng has been disrupted due to heavy landslide. A tower of 132kV Khuppi Feeder has been damaged near Ziro Point recently leading to total darkness in the two districts.
The power restoration work could take up to ten days depending on the weather condition, informed a departmental release. The linemen and staff of NEEPCO are working on war footing to restore power supply and the Executive Engineer (E), Bomdila Electrical Division, has assured to provide all possible help to NEEPCO Ltd for early restoration of power supply.

IMWA urges AAPSU to withdraw bandh call
ITANAGAR, June 23: Itanagar Market Welfare Association (IMWA) has appealed to All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (APPSU) to call off its proposed 12 hours Capital Complex bandh on June 25 in the greater interest of the general public of the state and people of capital complex in particular.

People caught selling lottery illegally in Itanagar
ITANAGAR, June 23: A case of illegal lottery selling today came to light when few people from neighbouring state of Assam were caught in Itanagar. According to the sources around 11.30 am four people, namely, Sheikul lslam (28), Ayaur Rehman (27), Abdul Awal(25) and Idzad Ali(32) all hailing from Lakhimpur, were allegedly selling lottery tickets illegally in the name and banner of Nabajyoti Club and Library, Fatehpur Bihpuria Lakhimpur, Assam, without prior intimation to the authority and without proper permission.
The members of Capital Youth Organizations (CYO), who caught hold of ticket sellers from Akashdeep market, informed ADM Talo Potom about it. ADM made spot visit and lauded CYO members for the initiative. Later CYO lodged an FIR at Itanagar police station in this regard.

Rhododendron, a large genus with over 1000 species of trees, herbs, shrubs and even epiphytes, is found in the North Temperate Zone and the Alpine zone with largest concentration of diversity in the Sino Himalayan region.
In India more than 125 species of Rhododendrons are recorded, of which 61 species,
17 subspecies and 12 varieties are reported from the state of Arunachal Pradesh.
The state harbours about 84.7% of the country’s total Rhododendron species, of these
32 species and 5 subspecies have been reported from Western Arunachal Landscape (WAL).
The Rhododendron rich forests of the region are in danger due to massive destruction
of the habitat due to pressure of development. Some of the species of Rhododendron

Rhododendron is an evergreen shrub that grows 3 to 5 feet in height. It has ovate
leaves which alternate on the stem. The genus Rhododendron blooms with spectacular

The plant is either known to most of people for its beautiful flowers or for their
uses as wood and for incense making. But very few know about the wonderful property
of the plant as biological indicators of climate change. Rhododendrons are thermotropic,
meaning that they are sensitive to temperature changes and responds with leaf movement.
The thermotropic leaf movement of Rhododendron is unusual because these movements
are in response to cold temperature rather than hot and dry environment as in most
of the cases. When the air temperature drops below 350Fahrenheit, the leaves will
curl and droop. The leaf curls up into tight form than their fully-
It is believed that this process gives a plant a certain survival advantages under harsh conditions. Rhododendrons drop their leaves as a way of reducing the amount of leaf exposed to sunlight. Too much direct sunlight during a prolonged cold spell can cause photosynthetic damage to leaves.
Curling is thought to serve a completely different function. Apparently, it is better for a leaf to freeze and then thaw slowly rather than freeze and thaw rapidly. By curling leaves, the plant ensures that each leaf gets more time to thaw and recover from the cold without being damaged than if each leaf were held out flat as normal. The thermotropic leave curling may serve to protect and prevent the cellular membranes from damage during the process of daily rethawimg that often occurs during early morning. When leaves do incur damage, it is generally when the plant is not in a dormant state. Freeze burn, for instance can cause a greyish appearance to burned areas of the leaf. The overall health of the plant, however, is not affected.
When leaves warm up too quickly after a spell of subzero temperature there is a risk that cell membranes within the leaves can be damaged by ice crystals.
Some facts on Rhododendron: Rhododendrons are referred to as “the king of shrubs” since they are regarded by many as the best flowering evergreen plants of the temperate landscape. Rhododendron was discovered by the 16th century Flemish botanist, Charles I’ Ecluse. Rhododendron is also the national flower of Nepal and the state flower of Sikkim.
A new Rhododendron species i.e. “Rhododendron mechukae” is reported from the Mechuka valley in Arunachal Pradesh at an altitude of above 2400mtrs. It’s pink flower blooms in early February.
Many species of Rhododendron are used for various purposes’ by the tribes of Arunachal Pradesh:
The dried leaves of Rhododendron anthopogon are crushed and mixed with ghee for making incense that are used in the Buddhist Monasteries in Tawang and West Kameng districts.
The leaves of Rhododendron hodgsonii, R. Kesangiae, R. Falconeri ssp. eximium etc is used for packing ghee, churpi, butter and various agricultural products including fruits like apple for transportation.
Fresh leaves of Rhododendron arboretum spp. arboretum, R. Cinnamomeum, etc in combination with juniper/ thuja/ pine leaves are burnt for making smoke that is believed to be scared and also that it helps in purifying the surrounding air.
Rhododendron barbatum, R. campylocarpum, R. keysii, R. flinckii, R. niveum, R. Hookeri, R.griffithianum etc. are used as fuel.
Wood of Rhododendron barbatum is used for making kurki handles, boxes, spoons etc.
Some species of Rhododendrons are poisonous to grazing animals because of a toxin called grayanotoxin. Leaves of Rhododendrons are considered dangerous as they show symptoms of stomach irritation, abdominal pain, abnormal heart rate and convulsion, coma and death.
However, in 1831, the medical efficiency of Rhododendron was established in homeopathy.
The freshly obtained leaves of Rhododendron chrysanthemum forms the source for a homeopathic mother tincture that cures a number of medical conditions including rheumatism, arthritis, gout and it is also effective in healing conditions like splitting pain in the ligaments, fever, headaches, hallucination, neuralgic eye pain as well as inflammation of testicles.
It has been established that individuals who need the homeopathic remedy of rhododendrons are basically nervous by nature and are seriously distressed or afraid by an approaching thunderstorm.
The magnificent flowers of Rhododendrons have a huge potential to make the state a tourist hub. But extensive deforestation, unsustainable extraction for firewood and incense making by local people without any conservation strategy and the pressure of development are posing serious threat to their existence and survival. These magical plants need to be conserved and explored sustainably.
The rich Rhododendron Forest offers an enormous platform for researchers to scientifically
explore the still unexplored Rhododendron world of the state as it holds a vast promise
for discovering more new species of Rhododendron in the days to come. Since the phenological
responses provide one of the best biological indicators of climate change, Rhododendrons,
with its availability in the temperate to alpine forests along the altitudinal gradient
would be an ideal species to explore. The traditional knowledge and information that
rests with the Monpa and Sherdukpen community, the major tribal groups inhabiting
the region, will be of extreme value and will serve as an important climate witness.

ITANAGAR, June 23: Altogether 17 farmers participated in a farmers’ exposure visit at ICAR, Basar organized by ATMA Papum Pare from June 17 to 19 last.

It was a proud moment for the Twenty two students who had scored highest mark in their CBSE Class X and XII examinations this year from their respective schools. They were felicitated with a cash prize and certificate of appreciation. The scorers were categorized as school toppers and toppers among Idu Mishmi students.
The school toppers received their awards from the Chief Guest Mutchu Mithi, Parliamentary Secretary, Horticulture. The highest scorer among Idu Mishmi students were awarded by the Guest of Honour Vijay Swami, Executive Director, RIWATCH.

Farmers demand renovation of defunct ‘Cold Storage’ at Niglok

The leafy and fruit vegetables are grown in large scale in the foothills of Ruksin area and plain reverine land of Jampani area, which are regularly supplied to different parts of West Siang, Upper Siang and Dibang Valley districts besides Dhemaji and Lakhimpur areas of Assam.
The 1000 MT capacity ‘cold storage’ which started functioning in September, 2010 at Niglok Industrial Centre near Ruksin has been lying defunct for the years and it is no longer in use.
The farmers lamented that none of the elected leaders pay any heed to their grievances, which is causing a great deal of irritation among them. They alleged that despite repeated appeals made by them, the agriculture department is not taking up the issue with competent authority.
“We have been demanding the authority to revive the cold storage at Niglok, but the authority has not yet done anything on pretext of power supply shortage. Besides fulfilling vegetable in the local vegetable markets, our surplus produces are imported to other distant places. But, we are compelled to sell the seasonal vegetables in very low prices as there is no cold storage or other storing facilities”, rued Basansing Pao, a progressive farmer of Lower Jampani.

Real action is needed
The illegal earth cutting activities in and around Capital Complex has become major source of concern for the citizens. Most of the roads including national highway, sector and arterial are getting damaged due to the earth cutting activities carried out nearby the road. Despite tall claims made in media, the capital administration has totally failed to take action against those persons.
The citizens of capital have no fear for law and therefore carries out rampant earth
cutting activities regularly. Their act also shows that they have no love for the
mother land. They are very much aware that due to their activities roads are getting

Hindi is being promoted by throttling the indigenous languages
Dear Editor,
This is in response to the news report titled "Promoting Hindi doesn't discourage regional languages: Rijiju"(June 20) .
It is absolutely irrelevant whether the NDA Government has adopted a "new" policy
to propagate the use of Hindi nationally or merely implementing an "old" circular
put out first by the earlier UPA dispensation. The fact remains that the Union Government,
led by parties of whatever political affiliation, has all along been barbarically
imposing Hindi -

Hindi is the language of the "Rajas" or it is the "Raja" of the languages! By which
democratic, moral or Constitutional authority do the Hindi-
The junior Home minister Kiren Rijiju has commented that by promoting Hindi, the authorities are not discouraging regional languages! But the hard reality remains that Hindi is being promoted by throttling the indigenous languages of the concerned regions.
In the Computerised daily tickets issued from Railway stations of West Bengal as well as in the tickets for Reservation in long distance trains, the names of the starting and destination stations are printed only in English and Hindi! By which moral, democratic or Constitutional authority can the Railway Department eradicate Bengali right in its own backyard and rob the Bengali passengers of their linguistic right?

Postpone bandh calls
Dear Editor,
I would like to request AAPSU fraternity to postpone the proposed bandh call on 25th June as most of the students who are pursuing their study in IGNOU and in Distance Education have their examinations on the same day.
I believe and hope that AAPSU being an esteemed student union body will consider our request and postpone the bandh call.
I also request the AAPSU team to inquire about the events related to students or exam schedules of that particular date before calling Bandhs.
AAPSU is for student’s welfare therefore please redress our request and postpone bandh call to some other day.

Cladestine activities of somegovernment employees
Dear Editor,
Through your esteemed daily I would like to bring to the notice of the State Govt, the unemployed citizens of the State and the employees of the Planning department about the clandestine activities of some deputed District Planning Officers/Deputy Directors of Planning.
That vide orders No. PD(EM)-
As the eight DPOs were deputed purely on temporary basis for three years term, the
Department vide order No.vide Order No. PD (EM) -
But shockingly notwithstanding the call back orders of the Higher Education Department these crafty DPOs are said to have been clandestinely trying for their regularisation in the planning department. In this connection the following points are worth pondering over:
There are two entry grades to enter into the Planning Department at Group “A” and Non Gazetted Group “B” namely, Research Officer (RO) and Research Assistant (RA) respectively which is entered through the Examination conducted by the State’s Apex recruitment board, the APPSCE.
The fact that the Education department in the entire State is running short of teachers especially after so much upgradation of schools and creation of new colleges, this news is sure to make everyone uneasy and hard to digest, particularly if they come from Economics/commerce background.
As per the RR the vacant DPO/DDP posts are supposed to be filled from the Senior ROs by promotion. And the resultant vacancy in the lower grades are to be filled through direct recruitment to facilitate the unemployed youth to get job.
Hence, it is fervently felt that such activities of a few people, seeking regularisation in other department to desert their own department must be opposed tooth and nail lest this should leave a bad precedence and encourage illegalities in other departments too.
Our state has been in bad light for such kind of illegalities in the past and has withnessed legal battles for a quite good many times for correcting the wrong done once for all.
It seems ROs, SRAs and RAs are still in deep slumbers, unaware of the clandestine activities of the temporary DPOs/DDP. I feel today’s revelation is enough to wake them up. May be they are relaxed and taking for granted that since the department of planning is at present attached to the Chief Minister nothing wrong can happen.
It is true seeing the impeccable record and promises he made to the people of the State to provide us corruption free administration. But how long? How long chief minister will hold the department with him?
My earnest request is also to all the welfare organisations, AAPSU and unemployed organisations, to use their cudgel against such attempts.
